Sophie Tucker has been a classic character in Bette Midler's live shows since the very early days. She first made her appearances during the 1975 Broadway show "Clams On The Half Shell Revue," and has appeared in all subsequent tours since. Giving the audience a mixture of dirty double-entendres and tasteless jokes, the character always garnered a laugh. The jokes became so well known that audiences could yell the punch line during shows whenever asked too. The infamous "Get Off My Back" joke, which became immortalized on the album "Live At Least," has remained a classic to this day. In the later years, Bette decided to drop the Tucker from the name and just call the character Sophie, since she felt the jokes were getting so vile that they were becoming disrespectful to the memory of the real Sophie Tucker. The character has progressed quite a lot through the years, but she has always remained faithful to her boyfriend Ernie and her best friend Clementine. Her appearance has changed a lot over the years, from emerging on stage in a leopard suit to having a whole musical number choreographed around her, all the way to trotting around in Coney Island dressed as a Gypsy.  All an audience has to hear is, "I will never forget it you know," and they know they're in for a good laugh. Sophie has become an iconic character in Bette Midler's concerts, and in this section we hope to preserve her legacy.
