THE IMMORTAL MIDLER
Bette Midler, "The Divine Miss M," explodes upon the nightclub scene January 12th, when she opens a 10-night engagement at the Copacabana, 10 E. 60th Street. She will do two shows nightly at 8 & 11 :30 p.m. thru January 22nd (except for 1/16 when there will be no performance). (Don't get your hopes up if you're a fan because all performances were sold out within 36 hours after the initial announcement.)

Bette Midler's manager, Aaron Russo, shut down her Oslo, Norway concert when the theatre refused to allow her crew to set up Bette's own lighting!

BETTE MIDLER: “I was an ugly, fat, little Jewish girl who had problems . . . I kept trying to be like everyone else but nothing worked.  One day I decided to be myself!”

BETTE MIDLER has her next film role all lined up. It will be in the remake of Gypsy. Rosalind Russell starred in the original in '63, but it wasn't successful.

BETTE MIDLER: "I'm bigger than life - if anyone can do it, I can."

The joke's on you if you swallowed all those tales racing around recently that Bette Midler was so broke, because of tax bills, that she was doing "extra" work as a waitress in a top New York nitery. Yep, Bette did just that one night, but it was the result of a bet. She either did it on a dare, or lost the bet; can't recall which. Anyway, the irrepressible Bette had customers - and fans - spinning there for a bit.

NEW DUO: The latest celebrity twosome is sort of interesting. I hear that actor Robert De Niro, who likes to stay out of the limelight, has discovered Bette Midler who loves the glare of the celebrity spotlight. The pair are inseparable and certainly do make an unusual combination.

Bette Midler joined Tom Waits at the Troubadour in Los Angeles recently . . .

SPINNING TALES . . . BETTE MIDLER's third album has gone down the tubes. It will be totally "reworked" by soul producer TONY SYLVESTER. PAUL SIMON was the original producer on the long overdue LP. Bet he doesn't have any "Kodachromes” for fondly remembering this partnership .  .

The newest blazing feud is that of BETTE MIDLER and HELEN REDDY. Seems BETTE describes HELEN on her TV special to be aired in the fall, as loitering before an audience. They bumped into each other at a discotheque recently, and if looks could kill, BETTE would be a casualty.

Look for DIANE KEATON to turn singer! Yes, the talented actress is going to record a few sides with record producer BROOKS ARTHUR; he's the man who produced KEITH CARRADINE and BETTE MIDLER's latest LP's, and who won the Grammy Award a few years back for producing JANIS IAN's "At Seventeen." More on this later; we'll keep you posted on DIANE's singing career. .

No love lost between BARBRA STREISAND and BETTE MIDLER. At a party the other day, somebody asked Barbra how she liked Midler's new hit record. With sweet innocence, Barbra asked, “Midler who?"

BETTE! DIVINE MADNESS - Tacky, sometimes trashy but full to the brim with the lady’s energy. That's Bette Midler onstage, and that's all that has to be said. Christmas and New Year's Eve performances, but no shows Christmas Day or Jan. 1. At the Majestic, W, 44th St. (246-0730). Seats difficult, but that shouldn't stop true fans.
