INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPT

The footage from this appearance apparently no longer exists, nor have any audio recordings surfaced.  Therefore, a written transcript from this appearance - Bette's very first on The Tonight Show - can not be made.  Below are lyrics to the songs that Bette is known to have performed during this appearance though.

Bette Midler Am I Blue
(Grant Clarke, Harry Akst)

Am I blue?
Am I blue?
Well, ain't these tears in these eyes telling you?
Oh am I blue?
Well I bet you would be too
If each plan with your man done fell through

Well, there was a time when I was his only one
But now, oh now now now I'm the sad and lonely one.
Oh god I'm lonely.

Oh I remember when I was gay
Oh I was gay, yeah, that was until today
Until today.
But now, now he's gone
He's gone, and we are through
Am I?
Am I . . . blue?

Come Up And See Me Sometime
(Louis Alter, Arthur Swantstrom)

I believe that everyone in life should have a mission
Making people happy is the height of my ambition
And when I get them happy
Mmmm, they stay in that condition
I got a system all my own

I've got a lot, and lots of what I've got
And what I've got's all mine
I assure you, I can cure you, if you're feeling blue
Ohh, come up and see me sometime

Ahhhh, I've got a flat where you can hang your hat
I've got a brand-new line
Maybe you would like me to explain it all to you
Mmmmm, come up and see me sometime

Oh, come up tonight
I think the paper said the moon will be bright
Ohh, they should have had it in the cards and all
Letters that tall,
Oh, but you'd be falling for little old me

Oh, here's the key, the room is 503
It's not so far to climb
Of course you've heard the spider's invitation to the fly
Why don't you come up and see me sometime.

Anytime . . .
The sooner, the better . . .
Ohhhhhh

Of course you've heard the spider's invitation to the fly
Why don't you come up and see me sometime

INTERESTING FACTS

This was Bette's very first time appearing on The Tonight Show.

Bette did not sit down for an interview during this show.

During Bette's second appearance on The Tonight Show - which would be her first sit down interview with Johnny - he mentioned that Bette had sung a couple of songs on her first appearance.  It's been documented by certain sources that those two songs were "Am I Blue" and "Come Up And See Me Sometime."  However, no recordings from this show have surfaced in order to confirm any of this information.  Nevertheless, during Bette's final appearance on The Tonight Show in 1992 (as Johnny's last guest) she recalled doing "Come Up And See Me Sometime" on the first show.  And when Bette first appeared on "The David Frost Show" just a few months prior, she performed "Am I Blue" and "Come Up And See Me Sometime," giving more credence to the fact that these were likely the same two songs she chose to premiere on The Tonight Show.

Bette received a cease and desist order from Mae West's people after performing "Come Up And See Me Sometime" on this show.
