The David Frost Show
April 7, 1970

INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPT

David Frost

Welcome back, welcome back, an extra few beautiful notes there from Mr. Billy Taylor. And now it's our great joy to welcome a young lady who's currently appearing in the off Broadway musical hit Salvation, and although she sings the music of today in the show, she was discovered in the club singing songs from the 30's, so you can see she's highly versatile, will you welcome her now . . . Miss Bette Midler.

Bette Midler

Am I Blue
(Grant Clarke, Harry Akst)

My parents were alive and well and young in the 1930's, and like most people of their generation they were influenced by the movies, especially my mother, who named me after her favorite film star. Well, I have two of my own favorites from that era now, two ladies who are brilliant singers and wonderful actresses. So I dedicated my first song to one of them, the lady who made it famous . . . Miss Ethel Waters.

Am I blue? Am I blue?
Well, ain't these tears in these eyes telling you?
Oh am I blue? Well I bet you would be too,
if each plan with your man done fell through.

Well there was a time when I was his only one.
But now, oh now now now I'm the sad
and lonely one.  Oh god I'm lonely.

Oh I remember when I was gay.
Oh I was gay, yeah, that was until today.
Until today.   But now, now he's gone,
he's gone, and we are through.
Am I? Am I . . . blue?

Thank you. Thank you very much.

Come Up And See Me Sometime
(Louis Alter, Arthur Swantstrom)

Now here is a lady who is never blue, her material maybe. She use to say . . .

I believe that everyone in life should have a mission,
Making people happy is the height of my ambition;
And when I get them happy,
mmmm, they stay in that condition;
I got a system all my own.

I've got a lot, and lots of what I've got,
And what I've got's all mine,
I assure you, I can cure you, if you're feeling blue;
Ohh, come up and see me sometime.

Ahhhh, I've got a flat where you can hang your hat,
I've got a brand-new line,
Maybe you would like me to explain it all to you;
Mmmmm, come up and see me sometime.

Oh, come up tonight;
I think the paper said the moon will be bright;
Ohh, they should have had it in the cards and all,
Letters that tall,
Oh but you'd be falling for little old me.

Oh, here's the key, the room is 503,
It's not so far to climb
Of course you've heard the spider's
invitation to the fly;
Why don't you come up and see me sometime.

Anytime . . .
The sooner, the better . . .
Ohhhhhh

Of course you've heard the spider's
invitation to the fly;
Why don't you come up and see me sometime.
